Sedentary jobs, decreased activity levels, and increased stress have made us a less mobile population. Our muscles are overactive and tight, creating imbalances in our bodies, which can lead to poor posture, joint pain, and a host of avoidable injuries. Most of us can’t afford a live-in masseuse, and massages from our significant others are expected to be reciprocated (and who wants to do that?), so how are we supposed to alleviate our tense, overactive muscles? Stretching! Has any topic in exercise been debated at such length? Should you or shouldn’t you? Before or after? Bouncing or not? I know suggestions have changed drastically since I began my athletic career in high school, and I’m only 40.
About 2 years ago, I was out for a jog and saw a runner wearing the most peculiar shoes. They looked like a glove with individual toe cut-outs. Fittingly enough, he said they were called the 5 finger running shoes by Vibram. Having never heard of this company or type of shoe before, I thought he was crazy for trying to run on them. Turns out, the shoes were part of a new craze among runners…barefoot running. (more…)
