SPOTLIGHT ON ONE OF ATHLETICO’S OWN |
| |
AthletiCo’s Sean McNeil, ATC, recently returned from the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro where he was selected to serve as an athletic trainer for the Futsal National team from the US Soccer Federation. This year’s Pan Am Games took place July 13-29 with over 5,000 athletes from 42 countries in the Americas competing in 34 sports. |

While in Rio de Janeiro, McNeil lived in the Pan Am Village and worked in the sports medicine center with more than a dozen other ATCs as well as a half dozen physicians, one massage therapist, and one chiropractor who all worked together as a team to help ensure the best possible care for all the U.S. athletes. McNeil was assigned to work directly with the U.S. Futsal Team, but he explains that when you volunteer with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) you actually work with all the U.S. athletes as they report to the sports medicine center for injury evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation.
Working with such elite athletes was a tremendous experience, but McNeil also says that the closing ceremonies were an event in themselves—unlike anything he had ever been a part of before. They took place in Maracanã Stadium, an impressive stadium originally built for the 1950 World Cup and one of the most respected symbols of the city of Rio. The delegations of the 42 countries that had taken part in the Games all converged together on the field in one giant celebration of sport and competition before an audience of 54,000 people. There was also a brief slide show of the games, followed by performances by numerous Brazilian music artists and speeches from the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Organizing Committee of the XV Pan American Games Rio 2007. For McNeil, the overall experience was incredible, and he looks forward to working with the USOC in the future.
Sean McNeil is a certified athletic trainer who works at Moody Bible Institute as an AthletiCo outreach athletic trainer. He has traveled with numerous US Soccer National teams prior to the Pan Am Games.
