PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT

AthletiCo at the MAX will be hosting a SPARQ Football combine on Sunday, March 30 at the McCook Athletic & Exposition (MAX) Center. Testing has become a viable measure to determine an athlete's athletic capacity.

jefry

SPARQ ratings are a great measuring tool for all sports including football, baseball, softball, track, lacrosse, soccer, and basketball. Our SPARQ certified coaches then send each athlete's results to a national database for all to view. SPARQ testing days are free to all athletes with a signed registration form and liability waiver. For more information or to register, please visit http://www.sparqtraining.com/registration.

AthletiCo will also be hosting two SPARQ Mini Camps for football athletes on April 2 and April 9.  These camps offer an opportunity for the athletes to come back to the MAX to work on the deficiencies that were exposed at the combine. Each mini camp is a two-hour session consisting of a dynamic warm-up and stations focusing on the four main components of athleticism: linear speed, explosive power, lateral speed, and core explosion

These will be the only official SPARQ combines offered in the Chicago area in 2008. Registration for these camps fill up fast as space is limited, so register today to ensure your athlete’s spot.

GOLF

The GPC Introduces the Tomi Putting System

Having trouble putting?  Not sure what the proper stroke looks like or feels like?  Get your putting stroke analyzed with the “Tomi” Putting System.  The Tomi Putting system captures and times the motions of the putter in three-dimensional space, from backstroke to follow-through.

In real time the Tomi putting system will measure the following:

  • Club alignment at address details
  • Club alignment at impact
  • Club path at impact
  • Stroke path and club rotation
  • Shaft angle at impact
  • Impact spot on clubface
  • Club speed at impact
  • Stroke tempo

Call 630-572-9700 and ask Sam for details on a lesson with the Tomi Putting System.

Shifting Gears and Rolling Out New Year “Revolutions” with xXx Racing—AthletiCo

Cycling is a terrific recreational activity, fiercely competitive, at times controversial sport and also a timely metaphor. For xXx Racing—AthletiCo the first membership meeting of 2008 provided a platform for the team to move clear of 2007 and a bridge to the year ahead.

The large banquet room at Goose Island Brew Pub could barely contain the enthusiasm, messenger bags, and spare wheels of members, prospective members, and parents of prospective members. At the start of the meeting, all chairs and available floor space were taken, and latecomers had trouble even getting in the door.

As is the custom at these monthly meetings, the first item on the agenda was “Race Reports.” Two team members recently took part in the National Cyclocross Championship race. The experience was shared with plenty of humor, kudos to fellow riders and a minimum of “I caught a fish this big….”

After quick recognition of the team’s managers and programs, the discussion turned serious and the true depth in spirit of xXx Racing—AthletiCo was revealed. This is a team that literally wears their hearts on their sleeves. The name of team founders who have died are inscribed in hearts incorporated into the design of their familiar red, black, and white jerseys. This brings up a significant and readily apparent change to the team. To mark the passing of team members Beth Kobeszka and Pieter Ombregt, both who died during races in the 2007, xXx Racing will wear solid black adorned with sponsor logos at all races this year. The dramatic change is a memorial to the riders and also a reminder to all cyclists for the need to prioritize safety.

Meeting organizers used the remaining time to plug programs and discuss the benefits of racing with this group. Programs have been created for Women, Elites, Juniors, Mountain Biking, Safety, and Bike Messengers. All of these programs are the means by which the Core Principles (see below) of the team are addressed and advanced. Joining the team delivers access to the resources of these programs, and also to the numerous advantages offered by sponsors such as SRAM, Saris, Rudy Project, Ritchey, Maxxis, Plan B, The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, Pactimo, Goose Island, Clif and, of course, AthletiCo Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation & Performance. This first meeting of 2008 was an impressive showcase to the commitment, enterprise, and athleticism of one of Chicago’s amateur sport teams.

AthletiCo’s Endurance Program co-Manager Brendan Yorke, PT, Loop, was introduced, and the services AthletiCo offers to the team were outlined. Several athletes stood up to offer testimonials to the treatment they received for injuries and also to their experiences with massage, bike fits, and group training at various clinics. Vic Speedwell, cyclist, personal trainer, and member of AthletiCo’s Endurance Program, is hosting a valuable training opportunity every Sunday through March 2008 for anyone interested in racing.  The sessions are being held at AthletiCo’s North Center location at 2035 W. Irving Park Road.  The “Off-season training for competitive cyclists” was created at the request of several xXx Racing—AthletiCo team members, but is open to anyone, space permitting. Please call Vic at the North Center clinic at 773.528.7502 to register or for more information.

This AthletiCo affiliate begins the year 125 riders strong, boasting one of the largest women’s fields of any area cycling team, and expects to grow. Visit www.xxxracing.org or follow the link from www.athletico.com for information about joining and/or supporting xXx Racing—AthletiCo.

xXx Racing—AthletiCo Core Principles

  1. Development of fitness and racing skills at all levels of experience.
  2. Open to all athletes who can support the principles and abide by team decisions.
  3. Focus of the team is on racing, although many members also enjoy non-competitive cycling.
  4. Retention of riders is crucial for the athletes as well as for the continued growth, success, and continuity of programs.
  5. xXx Racing—AthletiCo is an active participant in the broader Chicagoland cycling community and the world.
  6. The team is committed to outreach and diversity, reflecting the demographics of Chicago.
