AthletiCo/Team In Training Partnership Equals Success Story

Since 2003 AthletiCo has been affiliated with Team In Training, the world's largest endurance sports training program where members participate in endurance events to raise money on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Throughout the years, AthletiCo’s relationship with Team In Training has experienced continued growth.

AthletiCo currently provides on-site coverage with athletic trainers and physical therapists for the various training programs that Team in Training offers including the Marathon Training Program, Half Marathon Program, and Triathlon Program. In addition to on-site coverage, AthletiCo also provides medical-based lectures to these athletes to help them with common endurance-related injuries, injury prevention, and strength and conditioning.  In 2007, AthletiCo began assisting with the Team in Training Cycling program, offering stretching to the cyclists as well as medical lectures to help them achieve their individual goals.

Erin Egly, PT, DPT, West Loop, treated a Team In Training patient last year and shares with us the patient’s success story.

I first saw Chris as an injury screen in March 2007.  He had been experiencing cramping in his right gluts with running, which had limited him from finishing strongly in the 2006 Chicago Marathon.  At this time, Chris had begun training for 1/2 marathons and came into AthletiCo with some questions.

From the injury screen, I saw that Chris had some radiating symptoms.  After seeing a physician, he was referred back to AthletiCo with a diagnosis of piriformis syndrome with sacral torsion, which is radiating pain through the leg due to compression of the sciatic nerve at the hip.  Along with joint mobilizations and muscle energy techniques, Chris began undergoing a core and pelvic stability strengthening program with us.  His condition began to improve, but he was still having some flare-ups with running.  Chris received trigger point injections in addition to his physical therapy and responded well to both.  Soon we recommended Chris receive a video gait analysis with a clinician from the AthletiCo Loop clinic to help us determine proper shoe-wear.

In August 2007, Chris successfully completed the Chicago Distance Classic.  He continued strengthening with AthletiCo at a decreased frequency since he was improving.  Both Erin Malay, PT, and myself are experienced marathon runners who have both run the Boston Marathon, so we had fun helping Chris with mileage and training questions.  We also utilized our massage therapist for Chris’s therapy, which gave him significant relief after long runs, and we had Sean Hahn, PT, perform some Active Release Techniques (ART) for any soft tissue restrictions.  Our last visit with Chris was the Friday before the 2007 Chicago Marathon.  I was working the finish line at the marathon and saw Chris at the end.  I was happy to learn that he had finished the marathon in 3:58 with no pain or limitations (just hot!), a personal record for him.

AthletiCo is proud to be the official provider of rehabilitation, fitness, and performance for Team In Training. For more information on Team in Training, please visit www.teamintraining.org.
