I have spent most of my dance career (since herniating L4/5 when I was 19 dancing at Disney) in therapy. I really didn't know how long I would last in the dance world when I was in college, because I danced in a lot of pain on a daily basis. Of course that was never going to stop me from living out my dreams of becoming a professional dancer. Upon moving to Chicago in 1995, I was fortunate enough to connect with AthletiCo. I knew from that moment on that I was in good hands, working with therapists who really knew what I needed.
I have relied on the AthletiCo staff for the past 12 years of my dance career to keep me aligned and strong. Dance is a highly physical sport, without the padding and the arch support of an athletic shoe, so we often end the day with injuries that need to be tended to directly, efficiently, and quickly in order to perform the next day. I personally have endured 2 major injuries throughout my career. I had back surgery for a herniated disc and also reconstructive surgery for a torn ACL. Julie O’Connell, my AthletiCo PT, has been there through thick and thin with me, keeping my spirits high and getting me back on stage before anyone thought possible. I trust her completely. It’s so important to find therapists that you trust, and I am forever grateful to have AthletiCo to turn to. They expedite trips to doctors, MRI requests, and any other urgent appointments you may need to make. They have incredible relationships with the best doctors Chicago has to offer, amongst other cities. As a professional dancer, it is imperative to have treatment available to me for the specific needs that I require. Any sports therapist just will not do. Dancers are a different breed. AthletiCo’s dance medicine program is a blessing.
I truly believe that I left Hubbard Street after 10 and a half years fulfilled. I wouldn't change a thing. Thanks to Julie, Donna, Katie, Jose, and more for always being there 24/7 for me when I was in need. I felt safe and I completely trusted their decisions concerning my health and physical well being. I consider them family.
