Pickleball is a great, low-impact sport for people of all ages that has become vastly popular in recent years. Pickleball is similar to tennis, however, it is played on specific courts with a different style paddle, ball, and rules. Pickleball offers a variety of health benefits for its players in addition to being a fun activity for many people.

1. Cardiac Benefits

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous activity for adults. Pickleball is a great activity to meet those goals. Aerobic activity is good for heart health. Also known as “cardio,” aerobic activities help strengthen the heart muscles, which helps reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure.

2. Improved Balance and Coordination

Pickleball can help improve your hand eye coordination as you hit and receive the ball. You also need to have quick reaction time. In addition, the footwork required for the quick direction changes in pickleball helps with balance. Pickleball requires movement in all directions – forward, backward, and side to side. You can strengthen agility, balance, and coordination by performing these movements while playing.

3. Social and Emotional Benefits

Pickleball is a social sport and can help boost your mood. Pickleball is generally played in two teams of two people. You can meet new people or play pickleball as a whole family. Exercise can also boost your mood and mental health by releasing endorphins. Endorphins can help reduce anxiety, depression, and stress.

4. Fun

Simply put, pickleball is fun! This sport can be as fast-paced or relaxing as you want. It is a way to keep your body moving, and it is easy to learn. It is recommended to start slow, and play with people of a similar skill level, and then progress as you feel comfortable.

In addition to being a fun sport, pickleball offers many health benefits. If you are looking for a new workout or social activity for you and your family, try picking up a pickleball racket to see if it fits you!

As with any physical activity, be sure to consult your healthcare provider before getting started and take time to learn the rules and proper techniques to play safely.
