Upper Extremity Strengthening for Gymnasts

Gymnasts require significant strength, flexibility, and stability to compete in their events, whether they’re at the amateur or Olympic level. During their events, gymnasts place 2-4 times their body weight through their upper extremities (shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand). Upper extremity injuries are common, especially in younger athletes. There is a common misconception that pain is part of the sport, but the truth is you don’t have to compete with pain. Get ahead of slips and falls this winter! Here are some tips to help you and your loved ones reduce the risk of a fall this season and avoid potential injuries. We all know that falls in icy conditions can happen to anyone, but who do you think is most at risk? We all need to be mindful of the weather and the increased risk of slips and falls this winter. Unfortunately, as we get older, we are more at risk for falls, which are now the leading cause of injury for the 65+ age population. As the conditions get icy, we tend to see a rise in fall-related injuries such as concussions, fractures, and back strains and pain. Each year, 3 million older people are treated in the emergency room for an injury related to a fall. United States injuries incidence after a fall continue to increase at 1.5% per year, which correlates to 106,000 new fall injuries nationally, or more than $1 billion in fall injury spending. An Exercise Routine to Help You Fight the Winter Blues

Winter is just around the corner, and with Daylight Savings behind us, days are getting shorter and shorter. This tends to be the time of year when the “Winter Blues” start to emerge, and some people even develop Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or more severe cases of the Winter Blues. Winter Blues and SAD are both forms of depression. However, studies show that both can be positively affected by exercise, which has been shown to help with depressive symptoms, especially when it gets to be more vigorous. If you find yourself affected by the Winter Blues each year, an exercise routine can go a long way in helping boost your mood. Concussion Return to Learn

Concussions are very common in sports, with an estimated 14.3% of high school athletes reporting to have sustained at least one concussion in the last year. Concussions are the result of an injury to the brain in which the brain moves and rotates inside the skull from a blow to the head. One study showed that among both groups, rates of concussions were highest in the sports of football and soccer. In high school sports played by both sexes, girls sustained a higher rate of concussions, and concussions represented a greater proportion of total injuries than boys. Often, after a concussion is sustained, an athlete is held out of sports until they are symptom-free to avoid further injury.
