3 Things You Didn’t Know About Men’s Health Specialists

When someone thinks of men’s health, most people’s first thought is a magazine with the newest Avenger on the cover. For others, the definition of men’s health may be a yearly prostate screen. Still, for others, it might be making time for mental and physical health with exercise and self-care. These are certainly important aspects of men’s health, though maybe not the magazine cover.

My name is Nate Mancillas, and I am the clinic manager of Athletico South Chicago; and also have been the primary clinician treating men’s health issues on the South Side of Chicago. I wanted to give a brief overview of a few things you didn’t know about Men’s Health Specialists and how they can help.

1. Men’s Health Physical Therapy exists, and we are here to help!

While this may seem obvious, for many, it is not. Most people are unaware of the general benefits of physical therapy. Even less are aware that there are specialists who can help treat their issues of incontinence, pelvic pain, or sexual dysfunction without surgery or medication. Asking your physician can be a good place to start getting information. But even some physicians are not well versed in utilizing physical therapy to treat men’s health issues.

2. We can treat more issues than incontinence

Typically, patients who are aware of a Men’s Health Specialist are familiar due to issues related to incontinence. This can be due to prostate issues, age, etc. While many men’s health patients struggle with this issue, Men’s Health Specialists also treat issues related to sexual dysfunction, pelvic pain, and many other ailments/issues related to men. We can even help with other lingering injuries, including low back pain, which may be impacting other areas.

3. This treatment is very effective in achieving results

Many patients are often skeptical of the benefits of physical therapy for issues related to men’s health. A question I am often asked is, “How can exercise help me?” It can be confusing to think how issues treated by a Men’s Health Specialist could help when medication or surgery has been unsuccessful in achieving their goals. However, in my experience utilizing various methods, including neuromuscular training, strength training principles, therapeutic neuroscience education, and various other protocols, can achieve results that can be life-altering for patients.

Of course, this list is not all-encompassing and is just a simple introduction and overview of how a Men’s Health Specialist could help someone experiencing various issues. If you have more questions about managing men’s health issues, don’t hesitate to contact your local Athletico Physical Therapy clinic and schedule a free assessment. Free Assessments are available in-clinic and virtually through our Telehealth platform.
