What Is Vestibular Therapy?

Vestibular Physical Therapy or Vestibular Rehab Therapy (VRT) is an exercise-based treatment program which is designed to decrease symptoms of dizziness, spinning or loss of balance. The word “vestibular” refers to a connection between the ears and the brain which assists with balance while doing things throughout the day.

There are a multitude of different individuals who can benefit from vestibular physical therapy. One of the most common symptoms that may benefit from physical therapy is “Vertigo”. Vertigo is the feeling or sensation of movement or spinning when you aren’t moving. These symptoms tend to come on with changes of body position, such as laying down or getting out of bed. These symptoms tend to be caused by a “stone/crystal” in your ear that falls out of place. Physical therapy will take you through a variety of movements that try to get that stone/crystal back into the correct spot which will help the dizziness go away.

Even though vertigo tends to be one of the main symptoms vestibular therapists treat, the stones however are not the only thing which could be causing these symptoms. During an initial evaluation your therapist will also ensure your eyes are functioning the way they should. This is done by a variety of activities such as tracking an object with your eyes or keeping your eyes fixed to a target while your head is moving. You may also be asked to bring an object in towards your nose and asked when you see double. These tests can not only be used for diagnosing the problem but also used as a treatment for the symptoms you are having.
