manual therapyWhat Is Manual Therapy?

Also known as hands-on physical therapy, manual therapy uses no devices or machines. Instead, therapists use only their hands while performing skilled, specific techniques. In general, manual therapy includes soft tissue work and mobilization/manipulation.

When performing manual therapy, physical therapists apply pressure and movement to the soft tissues and joints of the body. This soft tissue work can help relax muscles, increase circulation, reduce tissue sensitivity, improve range of motion, and reduce or eliminate soft tissue inflammation.

Joint mobilization/manipulation techniques reduce pain, improve joint mechanics and allow for early return to exercises and daily function.

Manual Therapy can be a helpful treatment for a wide range of issues, including:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Muscle tension
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain and injuries
  • Hip, knee, ankle and foot problems
  • Hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder problems
  • Injuries caused by accidents
  • Work-related injuries
