ImPACT Frequently Asked Questions

AHAI: A Step aHead Baseline TestingAthletico Physical Therapy clinics only offer baseline testing through the A Step aHead program. All post-injury testing will need to be completed by an ImPACT provider physician. For assistance with finding an ImPACT provider and post-injury test administrator in your area, please contact the Athletico Physical Therapy clinic where the baseline test was performed.

Q: WILL I RECEIVE A COPY OF MY ATHLETE’S BASELINE TEST TODAY?
A: No, the results of the baseline test are not needed until an athlete has suffered a concussion. This letter serves as your proof that the athlete has completed a baseline test. Baseline test results are housed in a database that is managed by Athletico Physical Therapy. If your child sustains a concussion and you would like a copy of the baseline test, please contact baselinetesting@athletico.com.

Q: WILL THE ImPACT PASSPORT ID ALLOW ME TO ACCESS A COPY OF THE BASELINE TEST?
A: You will not be able to access the actual test results with the ImPACT Passport ID number. The ImPACT Passport ID serves as an individualized reference number that allows ImPACT providers to access the tests results.

Q: MY CHILD HAS TAKEN A BASELINE ImPACT TEST AND HAS NOW SUSTAINED A CONCUSSION. WHAT ARE OUR NEXT STEPS?
A: If your child sustains a concussion, remove the athlete from play and contact your child’s pediatrician, primary care physician or other healthcare professional experienced in evaluating concussions. Your child should not return to play or physical activity until clearance is given by one of the medical professionals mentioned above.

Q: WILL MY CHILD BE ABLE TO COMPLETE A POST-INJURY ImPACT TEST AT AN ATHLETICO CLINIC?
A: No, Athletico Physical Therapy clinics only offer baseline testing through the A Step aHead program. All post-injury testing will need to be completed by a physician who is an ImPACT post-injury test provider. For assistance with finding an ImPACT provider and post-injury test administrator in your area, please contact the Athletico Physical Therapy clinic where the baseline test was performed.

Q: IF MY CHILD SUSTAINS A CONCUSSION, WILL THEIR POST-CONCUSSION TEST BE COVERED BY INSURANCE?
A: Post-injury neurocognitive assessments are covered by some major insurance plans. You will need to contact the individual healthcare provider who will be administering the post-injury testing to verify they accept your insurance carrier.

Q: WHO SHOULD ADMINISTER AND INTERPRET THE POST-CONCUSSION TEST?
A: Many sports medicine clinicians can learn to interpret the test results and can be trained through a course offered by ImPACT called the Certified ImPACT® Consultant (CIC) Certification. A CIC is an ImPACT partner with the education, training, and experience that comes with completing the credentialed ImPACT Consultant Program. For assistance with finding a Certified ImPACT® Consultant in your area, please contact the Athletico Physical Therapy clinic where the baseline test was performed.

Q: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE POST-INJURY TEST RESULTS ARE INTERPRETED?
A: A post-injury test should only be interpreted by a properly trained healthcare provider that has completed the ImPACT CIC program. If the post-injury test results suggest the athlete is not fully recovered, additional recommendations will be made and he/she will not be allowed to return to contact practice or play. An additional test may be completed, based on the recommendation of this healthcare provider.

REMEMBER: ImPACT test results should be used as one source of information regarding the athlete’s level of functioning. Return-to-play decisions should be based on an evaluation by medical personnel in accordance with usual and standard medical practices.
