Like it or not, we are all getting older. For many, the changes associated with aging can affect their workouts. Some of the changes with aging include a decline in muscle strength, decreased muscle flexibility and less energy. In addition, aging leads to decreased sensation, decreased balance, and decreased bone strength. However, these changes do not have to affect your active lifestyle. In fact, staying active has documented health benefits for both your physical, mental, and emotional health.

Touring with the Joffrey Ballet: From Chicago to California

As an Athletico physical therapist, I have been supporting The Joffrey Ballet for more than five years. I usually work with the dancers while they are rehearsing and performing in Chicago, where my job is to triage, evaluate and treat issues that may arise from their rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule. Recently, my career with The Joffrey Ballet took me beyond Chicago, when I traveled with the company to three different cities across the country. We started in snowy, cold Minneapolis for two performances of a full length ballet called Anna Karenina, then off to Santa Barbara for two mixed repertory shows, and finished with one final performance in San Diego.

The average American spends more than four hours on their mobile devices texting, checking email, playing games and browsing social media. In addition, many spend a large portion of the work day typing and mousing on the computer.1,2 The trouble with the amount of time spent on these devices is that they are not ergonomically designed for heavy, repetitive use. Unfortunately, many people don’t become aware of this until they experience pain in their hands and thumbs.
