The Dreaded Side Stitch

“When things look worst, we run the most.” This is a quote from Christopher McDougall in the famous book Born to Run and how, in times of great stress, we run. McDougall mentions three times in this country’s history that there have been substantial running booms: the Great Depression, Vietnam, and September 11th1. “Maybe it was a coincidence. Or maybe there’s a trigger in the human psyche, a coded response that activates our first and greatest survival skill when we sense the raptors approaching.” - Born to Run. It is reasonable to think that we are currently in the midst of this country’s fourth running boom due to the uncertainty surrounding the Coronavirus. So, now is the perfect opportunity to speak on one of the more common symptoms with running: the dreaded side stitch. (more…)

What is Pre-hab?

Do you have a surgery planned soon? Is your sport physically demanding and places you at increased risk of injury? Are you worried about weakness in your joints as you age? Preventative rehabilitation may be the key for you! Preventative rehabilitation or “pre-hab” helps condition and strengthen the body to improve recovery after surgery, speed up the recovery process and may prevent injury from occurring. All of these articles have had a plethora of great exercises and sample routines to follow and they’re a wonderful place for you to get started. Whether you are continuing your work out at home or are able to get back to the gym, here are a couple of techniques that you can use to enhance your training and spark new muscle growth and strength gains. Why It’s Safe to Attend Physical Therapy During COVID-19

Rewind to mid-March – businesses were closing, new health regulations were developed and there was a lot of uncertainty as to what was considered safe. COVID-19 created a lot of swift changes in society as the world has adapted to a new “normal.” Essential health care businesses were able to remain open to see patients and provide services to those who needed them. Primary care offices, emergency departments and physical therapy clinics kept their doors open and continue to help those in need. However, patients may still wonder if it is, “safe to receive medical care.” Athletico has implemented a wide range of health screening measures, social distancing guidelines and cleaning procedures in order to ensure the safety of all patients who entered clinic doors. Returning To Sports After Quarantine

At-Home Lower Body Strengthening Exercises

Normally, athletes would be in the midst of their summer sports leagues in preparation for the upcoming school sports season. Due to COVID-19, our athletes are now participating in online and virtual practices with their teams, with some states just starting modified live training. One aspect that should not be overlooked as high school sports associations plan for fall sports seasons, is how our athletes are continuing to stay strong despite closed gyms and school weights rooms. While working out at home is an option, you may find you’re limited due to lack of equipment and your environment. To help, here are a few exercises athletes can do to strengthen their legs and help prevent knee injuries. How to Practice Mindful Eating

Often young adults starting college gain weight due to their change in environment (i.e. different eating habits, lack of working out, etc.) It’s been coined the “Freshman 15.” Now that COVID-19 has interrupted everyone’s daily routine, people are buzzing around the term “Quarantine 19.” With the sudden change in our habits, people may feel as if they are putting on additional weight, and notice their eating habits have changed. Stress eating, access to more or different foods, distracted/mindless eating, and different eating patterns - can all account for weight gain. The closure of gyms, running paths, and recreational activities can also contribute to weight gain. Here are some solutions to practice more mindful eating. (more…)
